5 Things to Know Before Going From Blonde to Brunette
As the fall season approaches in San Diego, many of our clients ask us about transforming their cool-toned blonde hair into warmer brunette tones. Going from blonde to brown can be very exciting, especially in the expert hands of Flirt Salon’s colorists. However, having a great stylist isn’t the only thing to consider when going from lighter to darker hair. Here are 5 things you should know before you go from blonde to brunette.
1. Try on a Wig First
Changing your hair color can completely change your look. Before you fully commit to a drastic change, you should first try on a wig to make sure you like how you look with brunette hair. Just Google a wig store in San Diego and go try on a few different tones. Be sure to take pictures of the ones you like best so you can show your stylist.
2. Change Your Hair Color in Phases
Going from blonde to brunette can be jarring for many women, especially if you’ve been blonde for a really long time. We usually suggest darkening your hair in phases to avoid going darker than you’ll like. You may realize that you prefer a color somewhere between blonde and brunette. During Phase One of your color transition, ask your stylist to add some lowlights into your hair. This will create more dimension and still give you a playful new look. Then if you’re ready to go darker, try a very light brown on your next salon visit and go from there!
3. Bring Photos of Your Brunette Goals
Even the best hair colorists aren’t mind-readers, so be sure to save some photos of your brunette color goals to show at your salon appointment.
4. Consult with Your Stylist First
As hair colorists, we know a thing or two about which colors and tones look best on which skin types. The photos you save of your color goals may look great on the model with warm skin tones, but may not look great on your cooler skin tones (or vice versa). That’s why it can be helpful to consult with your stylist first. At Flirt Salon, we offer free 15-minute consultations. Give us a call!
5. Aftercare is Important
After you’ve gone from blonde to brown, you’ll want to make sure you’re taking good care of your new color. If your hair was damaged from years of bleach or over-processing, it’s possible that a slight green tint can start to show once you switch to brunette. Be sure to use hair products that nourish your locks, and consider using shampoos and conditioners that are formulated for brunettes. Using a color gloss at home can also help maintain your color. Ask your stylist for at-home product recommendations.
